A Vision From My Childhood

The early days of my childhood I recall
Were spent on a hot Texas ranch
As I spent my time hunting for food
In every stream and wooded branch

Early each morning at the break of dawn
I would whistle for my faithful dog
Grab my rifle from its resting place
And go in search of a deer or hog

While walking through the woods one day
I came upon a very small stream
Before my eyes sat a dark haired maiden
The most beautiful girl I had ever seen

I quickly and silently hid behind the bush
As I watched her wash her long dark hair
For I did not want to startle her
Or let her know I was even there

The sound of the small birds singing
Caused her head to raise and turn
And as she smiled and looked at me
My feelings for her began to burn

Surprisingly she spoke my language
As her tribe was camped very near
Storing up supplies for the winter
Soon the ice and snow would be here

Early each morning you could find us
Together on the banks of this creek
As a new feeling aroused in my body
And in search of an answer I did seek

This long dark haired raven beauty
Took me to heights I never knew
So in love with this Indian maiden
What was happening I hadn't a clue

I knew one day the time would come
For her to depart and say goodbye
The family would pack and go away
For she belonged to the Choctaw tribe

My days are now spent in mourning
For the maiden with the long dark hair
Regretting I hadn't followed my heart
To tell her of the love I had there
