Children Live What They Learn

While visiting the home of my daughter
I noticed the hour was way past eight
So I said goodnight and do sleep well
And now don't ya'll stay up to late

Recalling the words I had just spoken
A smile quickly appeared on my face
For after all my kids were now grown
And could go to bed in their own pace

Slowly I climbed the long staircase
Stopping at my grandaughter's door
And peeking inside ever so quietly
I watched as she knelt upon a floor

A sweet tiny voice said come inside
And you can join us as we all pray
As before me were dolls and bears
Hands folded in a reverant display

My old heart swelled with such pride
As I listened to the words she said
Speaking to the Lord with such love
While we all prayed beside her bed

Soon each of us said our final Amen
But I stayed so that we could chat
And she told me of how she'd learn
To speak to the Father like that

I always watch Mommy and Daddy
As with prayer they start the day
Saying the grace before every meal
And beside a bed kneeling to pray

Mommy told me Grandma of long ago
As a child she would watch you too
Praising God as aloud you did sing
And wondering if this you ever knew

We said goodnight with a hug and kiss
As my eyes filled with so many tears
Realizing tiny eyes had watched me
And I didn't know it all those years
