Joy Of Living

I listened to the loud exciting laughter
As my tiny grandchildren played
And as I stepped into the yard
I was greeted and wetly sprayed

In the shadows one of them smiled
Hiding and waiting with the hose
Giggling and calling to the others
'Let's wet MeMaw's new clothes'

The great chase was on as we did run
But they caught me at the old gate
And as I stood in the summer sun
I knew a soaking was now my fate

Upon the grass the little ones did lay
Talking and smiling at their plan
And knowing it would happen again
I got up laughing, and slowly ran

I quietly hid when I reached the porch
As I made some plans of my own
But my thoughts were interrupted
By the loud ringing of the phone

'It's your Pepaw, and he is coming home
So get your pranks ready for him
You have tired your poor MeMaw out
But I will get the camera and film'

Their giggles and laughter could be heard
As they conspired as to what they'd do
And their PePaw would be so surprised
For they knew he had not a clue

'The grandchildren are anxiously waiting'
I laughed as he entered the door
'They said for you to come outside'
Knowing he'd get wet and a lot more

Yes, poor Pepaw was the latest victim
As the grandchildren had got him wet
And as we laughed, we did all agree
This summer we would never forget

This poem is dedicated to my grandson Michael who became an angel on June 13, 1997, at the age of seven years old due to an accidental drowning.

We love and miss you Michael and thank you for the many cherished memories we have of you. You will be forever loved and missed and we will always remember the times you chased us around the yard laughing as you wet us with a water hose ~ Your MeMaw ~
