Misty Morning Light
No birds were singing on this hot August morn In a distant foreign land
across the seas Only the sound of battle could be heard As she wondered
would this war ever cease
Sounds of crickets on a full moonlit evening And bullfrogs as they
jumped from the banks Were replaced by explosions and gun fire And the
humming of weary army tanks
Prayers from family and friends for her safety Offered to God for her
soon to return Her own heart ached in much the same way While the grip on
her weapon remained firm She could smell her dear mama's cooking Only
now it was rations from a can She longed to hear the sound of
laughter Playing tag and giggling as they ran The nights
spent joining in grown up talk And the tunes that were played on a fiddle
Were replaced by watching for the enemy And hoping you weren't caught in
the middle Hours spent on the old creek and bayou Catching fish from
daylight to dusk Now hours were spent in combat training For her own
protection this was a must Why oh why did she have to come here
Please Lord, let this war soon be over All she wanted was to arrive
safely home With her parents, sister, and brother Each day she
waited for news from home As the old life style she sorely did miss The
boys that came 'round to visit her Trying to steal a hug or a
kiss As she looked at the now misty morning Her heart pounded and
continued to yearn Knowing loved ones were offering prayers for her And
hoped soon to the bayou she'd return
