My Mama's Prayer

This poem is very hard to write
And I only display the truth
It's about a very great woman
And her name was Mettie Ruth

Five children the Lord gave her
Four little girls and one tiny boy
And each one she loved so much
As they were her pride and joy

She lived in southern Louisiana
And did raise her family there
The times were not always easy
But she had much love to share

Not very much money did she have
But you never heard her complain
For she was always so grateful
And no one knew she was in pain

Then one day she became very ill
And to the doctor she had to go
The news she received wasnt good
But the little ones did not know

Taking good care of the children
From dawn until the setting sun
She never complained or was angry
And the hard work was always done

And then one day this lovely lady
Grew tired and oh so very weak
The time had come for her to rest
As her strength she tried to seek

She had to spend sometime away
From her family and her friends
Oh how we missed this sweet lady
And the sad story now begins

We found out she was very sick
What she had there was no cure
Why had she not told us long ago
Was it because she was not sure

The months now turned into years
And she wasn't getting any better
As the time we did spend with her
Was slowly getting even sadder

We watched as such a lovely lady
Was stricken and in much pain
And oh to have her back with us
To have her once more whole again

In the year of nineteen sixty one
On a warm day in the month of July
The Lord above did call her home
To live with Him forever on high

And everyone was grieving for her
As she was loved by so very many
But she was no longer in the pain
For she had already endured plenty

I know now that she watches over us
And each day she is heard to pray
Oh God these are my little childen
Please save their souls today

Yes, she is a truly special woman
And there will never be another
As each of you may have guessed
The lady Mettie Ruth is my Mother
