Sounds of the old mail truck on the gravel
Disturbed my much needed afternoon nap
And as I peeked through the open blinds
I removed the fluffy kitten from my lap
Grabbing a jacket I stepped onto the porch
To see what kind of letters had been sent
And lands, the words my eyes did behold
Made me shout as back to my house I went
My shaking hands held a note of invitation
For a family reunion that had been planned
Down on the banks of the Louisiana bayou
With the entertainment being a french band
Quickly I raced to the phone and made a call
To let my brother across the mountain know
The great news about the fall festivities
And to grab his guitar, fiddle, and bow
The excitement could be heard in his voice
As the words to Jambalaya he began to sing
And I knew then we would have such fun
For a cajun will party like a great king
The day arrived and we set out on the road
And after many hours we finally were there
Such noise and sounds of jubilant emotion
As cousins hugged and said glad yall here
Gumbo and links of hot boudain on a table
Along with cakes and tasty pumpkin pies
Was the big feast that was set before us
As moonshine filled the older men's eyes
Lands, the laughter, singing and dancing
And enjoyment we all witnessed that day
Mais sha', it was a heck of a good time
You even heard the cajun scarecrow say
A family reunion held in the fall season
On an old bayou is my story I've told
Where kinfolks joyfully came to gather
Shouting 'Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler'
('Let The Good Times Roll')
