One Fateful Summer Day

Loud rumbling was heard in the distance
And as the thunderstorm quickly appeared
My thoughts recalled a day such as this
One embedded in my mind with great fear

A hot summer day in the early forties
As the warm rain came pouring down
My sister and I begged to go outside
An act that caused my Mother to frown

The dirt road could no longer be seen
As the rain had turned it into mud
And laughing we would run and play
Jumping and landing in it with a thud

When daddy came in from work we knew
That both of us would be in trouble
And as he gently tried to lecture us
We would just loudly moan and grumble

That fateful day two children did play
Upon a nearby road in an old box
And not knowing that a car approached
They continued to hide like a sly fox

The driver of the car had been drinking
And for his own life he did not care
As hitting the box in his drunken state
Neither of the children had been spared

That day remained forever in our minds
As no longer did we want to go and play
In the black muddy road of our old town
And in my heart this family does stay

You ask me if this story is truly real
And I say yes, it is a very pure fact
A man who in years did go insane
After taking two lives in a drunken act
