A day so very hot for a springtime
One would think summer was here
As temperatures were rising higher
The sky very beautiful and clear
In need of some fresh vegetables
And of course fruit tasting sweet
I embarked upon a farmers market
Searching for bargains I could eat
Rows of berries displayed before me
With colors of black and bright red
Made my mouth hunger for just a bite
As I read what each price tag said
In a corner stood a huge arrangement
Containing glass jars and shiny tops
And directions on how to do canning
To preserve all of these tasty crops
Lingering before this great display
I wondered if possibly I should ask
Just how much trouble would it be
To learn to do this unknowingly task
Quietly I stood pondering my question
As an elderly lady suddenly did appear
And with a big smile she said 'welcome
Can I help you with something my dear'
Happy moments from my early childhood
Filled my mind as we continued to chat
Reminding me of the time I had spent
With my grandma as at her table I sat
Watching her as she had busily canned
Fresh fruit from bushes and the trees
Not only had she preserved the food
But many memories that I'd later see
Leaving the market on that spring day
And deciding that canning I would try
I knew this trip had been a blessing
For I found more than produce to buy
