Footsteps running through a dimlit forest
And the howling of a wild pack of dogs
Were sounds heard as the daylight faded
Casting shadows upon the trees and logs
Not a breeze was evident to rustle leaves
As the figure panted as he quickly ran
And as to the question of why he did flee
The answer is one some may not understand
A year ago his life had suddenly changed
Leaving him distraught and all alone
With no family left he could go to visit
And not a friend to call on the phone
The daylight hours would find him working
Trying so hard to go about a normal life
But then as the moon cast its eerie glow
He recalled memories of his loving wife
The woman he loved with his heart and soul
Had been killed in a early morning crash
And as her body was placed into the ground
He sped away from her gravesite in a dash
Trying hard to cope with his dreadful loss
Was much more than he could possibly bear
And as he was weak he tried a few drugs
As they made him forget and no longer care
A few short weeks ago he came to realize
His life was destroyed because of drugs
As he found himself stoned in an alley
Dealing cocaine with a neighborhood thug
Now as he runs through the deep dark forest
He knows his life has become a living hell
Not having a clue as to where he's going
His addiction is one that is known so well
Sadly so many people lead this kind of life
Searching for help to make them feel alright
To escape and cope with grief and reality
But are left running like a thief in the night
