A weekend filled with many errands to run
And knowing today I had so much to do
I packed a lunch and got into my truck
As down the country lane I quickly flew
The road was long and full of sharp turns
So I knew that I should slow down a bit
And as my speed now seemed like a crawl
I gazed upon the colors autumn did emit
My first stop was at the farmers market
Where a scarecrow sat in an old chair
And as I went about gathering produce
His eyes followed me with a blank stare
Now what could this old scarecrow want
I wondered aloud as I passed him by
And why was he watching me so closely
From the carvings that were his eyes
I approached his straw filled old body
Whispering quietly in his pumpkin ear
Why do you look at me so cautiously
And just what do you have to fear
None heard a voice as to me he spoke
And told me to sit awhile and visit
But hastily I did pull me up a chair
For I knew I didn't want to miss it
Do you think today we met only by fate
And that you stopped only by chance
Oh no, the old scarecrow did proclaim
As I questionally gave him a glance
Your life has been filled with such hurt
And many of your friends feel it too
But I am here now to tell you all
That others jealousy is the real clue
Don't let a person's words offend you
But instead hold your head up high
And as you walk each day with the Lord
Trials and tribulations will pass you by
A cool breeze rustled the fallen leaves
And I knew then it must be time to go
For now the scarecrow had fallen silent
As he'd told me everything he did know
Verses to the poem have grown in number
But the reason is so very plain to see
Our God will speak to you in many ways
As through a scarecrow he spoke to me
