Sleep My Little One, Sleep

The early morning sun peeked through the blinds
As she yawned and rubbed her weary eyes
Once again her sleep had been shortened
From rocking her baby to quiet her cries

As she now slept peacefully in her crib
A gentle kiss her Mother did place
Touching her cheek softly with her hand
While in awe at the beauty of her face

As she stood there quietly watching her
A small smile was on her babys face
She wondered what she was dreaming
Laying there in all that frilly lace

She thought of all the years to come
Of birthday parties and all the toys
The time would come to go to school
And of course there were the boys

Days would be filled shopping for clothes
And disagreements through teenage years
All the late night sounds of laughter
And the secrets that we'd sometimes hear

Too soon the day to leave would approach
Seeking independence and a life on her own
She knew in her heart when that day came
The feelings of sadness from being alone

As a tiny whimper now came from the crib
She knew these memories she would keep
But for now my sweet precious daughter
Sleep my little one, sleep
