A gentle breeze rocked the tattered hammock
As she lay quietly reliving her past life
Knowing the time had come to face the ones
That were causing her such pain and strife
How could she have been so naive and foolish
And not know they were putting on an act
As they'd call and say hello, how are you
All the while talking behind her back
Slowly she sipped her cold glass of ice tea
Watching the sun disappear behind the clouds
Sighing heavily she debated what she'd say
If by chance she faced them in a crowd
Could it have been only a short time ago
That they said 'glad you came to stay'
But now she wondered what had she done
To cause them to talk about her this way
Watching the butterflies flutter in the air
And listening to the birds joyfully sing
Her mind continued to recall the past weeks
As lazily she lay in the old hammock swing
Such hateful resentment these women did feel
And perhaps they envied her happy life style
Or possibly craved her many earthly blessings
As great love radiated from her cheerful smile
One proclaimed she was truly a christian
And lived her life by God's holy book
While the other thought she did no wrong
As behind a person's back she gave a look
Oh yes, these two people called her family
To her face they pretended that they cared
But each time she took her leave from them
Their evil feelings for her they'd share
In the distance a thunderstorm was brewing
As the rumble disturbed her deep thoughts
And slowly rising from the tattered hammock
She knew soon a new one would be bought
The loud ringing of the phone startled her
And as she heard the familiar whiney lies
Her heart knew that soon it would be over
No longer would tears fill her brown eyes
In closing this poem about faces of deception
I pray that this doesn't happen to you
But friend and family actions mislead many
And it's so sad that we didn't even have a clue
