The Heartbreak Of Alzheimer's

In the darkness of night she sat all alone
Quietly watching him as he slept
While shadows danced across the room
Silently in the corner she wept

With tears of sadness falling from her eyes
She cried for a husband she once knew
Now robbed of his life by Alzheimer's
As her identity to him he had no clue

A great figure of a man respected by all
He was now being stripped of his pride
As he lived his life in such confusion
Although many medication they tried

When first she learned of his condition
She prayed 'Dear Lord give me hope
I face a sad and heartbreaking journey
I need the strength so that I may cope'

Closely she watched to keep him from harm
As some days he would rant and rave
While other moments were spent in silence
Always willingly her love she gave

Grandchildren to him were a shining light
Now no longer could he call them by name
And not understanding that grandpa was sick
They thought he was merely playing a game

Each day she watched as he slowly regressed
To the point needing to be clothed and fed
No longer knowing the month, day, or year
He was comfortable just staying in bed

Then early one cold and wintery morning
Screams of obscenities did she hear
Coming from a man that loved the Lord
And had been a preacher for many years

Quickly she ran and it was then that she knew
She could no longer take care of him alone
For he walked outside without a care
And not a stitch of cloth on his bones

She cried 'Oh Lord, please help me make a call
For I do not want to put him in their care
But I have no choice, and I cannot help him
Please forgive me is my everlasting prayer'

Rising slowly from the darkness of his room
She stood silently by her husband's side
Then knowing she had done all that she could
She said 'Honey I love you forever, goodbye'
