The Rookie

All alone on the sidelines he quietly sat
Watching the action from afar
And as great excitement filled the air
The dark night came alive with stars

This moment was of great importance
For the championship was at hand
His team had not been defeated
Each game they had taken command

A small boy only fifteen years of age
Dreaming of football every night
Envisioning himself becoming a pro
Screaming fans and flashing lights

Playing the game was his only passion
He practiced each day after school
Wanting to be someone important
But some said he was such a fool

Why couldn't they seem to understand
Football was all he wanted
One day he would show them all
That his dream had not been daunted

If only they would just let him play
He would display to them his skill
With accuracy he would pass the ball
While his opponents seemed to stand still

A quarterback position was in his dreams
For he'd prove that he was great
Calling the plays in the huddle
Defeat was his opponents fate

Fourth quarter was quickly ending
They were behind by only a few
The stands were deathly silent
Coaches didn't know what to do

A voice in the distance was calling
'Come in here and give us a hand'
'We only have one chance to win'
'Your chance to prove you're our man'

With helmet in hand he took to the field
This night he would make a play
An unknown boy as a quarterback
Playing in the Superbowl one day
