A day filled with many errands to run
I set out on my journey into town
And not looking forward to the trip
I knew my face displayed a big frown
Reaching the city I stopped by a park
And as I sat upon the bench to rest
A stranger appeared and as we talked
He asked, 'Is the rural life the best'
I described the years that I had spent
Free from the noise and all the gloom
Swinging upon the old front porch
Watching the flowers as they bloom
A rooster's early morning wake up call
Beckoning me from his barnyard seat
As he lets me know it is time to rise
And the livestock are all wanting to eat
Birds singing as they take their flight
Gracefully soaring in search of food
And the fresh aroma of coffee brewing
Wakes me in a very calm restful mood
Entering the barn all the cows do wait
Patiently they stand for their turn
As it is time for them to give milk
And white cream will soon fill the urns
Tractors and plows are seen in the field
As the workers till the earthly ground
And making it ready to plant the seeds
Later covering them in small mounds
Clucking of the hens as they lay an egg
And the quacking ducks as they stroll
Are sounds of the everyday rural life
Pleasantly a scene in which to behold
A wave or a nod as a neighbor you greet
Or a gathering where fiddles are played
Are all a part of this great country life
And if you visit I'm sure you'll stay
The time had come for me to take my leave
So I bid the stranger a fond goodbye
And I smiled as I drove back home again
Knowing the rural life I'd live til I die
