Tom's First Phone Call

Tom's First Phone Call

The last we heard from Tom he had told us the story of two small children that had lost their life which was his first recollection of death as a young child.

He has now moved on with his family to a small town in Bruni, Texas with a population of two hundred people .

Their neighbors were the Wilson's who had a PBX phone stand in the front room which served as the phone service for the whole town.

Tom being only five or six years old at the time was of course a very nosey child and could not understand why the lady was plugging in lines to some little holes and talking to herself. Of course he never asked her why but just figured she was nuts or something and didn't want to get close to her.

One day Tom's mother told him to go over to the Wilson's and call his grandma. That is when he learned all about what the lady was doing with those wires . He felt really brave then when his mother told him that his grandma's number was sixty three .

Tom left his home traveling two blocks through the brush where rattle snakes like to hide but by then he knew all about snakes.

Reaching the Wilson's home he told the lady he was suppose to call his grandmother and her number was sixty three. Of course the lady in charge of the phone already knew the number.

Tom climbed up on a chair that was under a large brown box attached to the wall. There was a wire coming out of it and it was hooked to a round thing which one end was large with a bunch of holes in it .

He was told by the lady to put it to his ear and she would ring up his grandma for him. Lands, little Tom was so confused because he could hear his grandma but couldn't see her . He was really mixed up when he was told to talk in the mouth piece.

Of course everyone was laughing at Tom by now. He hollered really loud in the mouth piece causing them to laugh even harder.

Tom told his grandma the message from his Mother and quickly got off the phone because he had just witnessed a miracle.

Running home Tom told his Mother what had happened and she laughed real hard and hugged him and told him how proud she was of what he had done. Of course after all those hugs Tom was alright . Today Tom still will be the first in line for a hug.

Another true story about Tom's childhood. I do appreciate him sharing his experiences with me so that I can pass them on to you.
