Understanding A Grandparent's Grief
A subject for me very close to my heart
I wish to make you all fully aware
The feelings of grief a grandparent feels
Losing their grandchild so please beware
It is difficult for some to even comprehend
Unless you personally experience it first hand
The agonizing pain and sorrow one endures
When you feel dead and unable to stand
You believe that life has been totally unfair
And you long for the way it should be
A grandchild should never be called upon first
But unfortunately this has happened to me
You cry and scream this just couldn't be true
Turning anger toward the good Lord above
Surely He has made a correctable error
For He'd never take the grandchild you love
A child may have lived for days or for years
While some die in their sweet mothers womb
The pain from their loss is still measured the same
With a life left feeling cold as a tomb
You try your best coping with life and its tasks
Giving love and comfort to your child
They have lost a most precious part of their life
Leaving a families hearts breaking all the while
As the days and years seem to drift slowly by
Many will ask why it is you still grieve
Have they almost forgotten my precious little one
That use to smile while tugging on my sleeve
Some say grieving for long is not healthy for you
Your grandchild is in a far better place
Even suggesting you stop mentioning his name
This stirs up anger one can see on my face
We miss our grandchildren with all of our hearts
Cherished memories will forever live on
You may feel uncomfortable and don't understand
Why we speak of them from morning till dawn
My grandchild occupies much room in my heart
He is so loved and will never be replaced
I will think of him everyday till my last breath of life
Knowing we will be reunited by God's grace
If you know of a grieving grandparent somewhere
Be kind and gentle with words you may say
Listen and show understanding for them
And give thanks for your grandchildren this day
