An Angel By My Side
Standing all alone on a cold February morn
Watching as the snow blanketed her grave
Upon it he placed a single red rose
Remembrance of a life he couldn't save
Wiping the warm tears from his rosy cheeks
He whispered to her his inner feelings
And while his sad heart continued to break
To the past, his mind went reeling
Memories he recalled of a warm summer day
When he climbed quickly from his cozy bed
A special occassion for rejoicing had arrived
The moment had come for them to be wed
They promised their love would last forever
As marriage vows were exchanged on that day
Sounds of great celebration could be heard
Each quest sharing what they had to say
Their life was one of great excitement
Each day lived as if it were their last
Nights were filled with romantic dining
As shadows from the bright moon did cast
An early morning call brought joyful news
All test had come back and were true
A new life they would welcome soon
As they shopped for shades of blue
The days and weeks had quickly passed
The baby's birth was drawing very near
When a doctor's call shattered a dream
With a message no husband wants to hear
A big decision was in need of making
One which had to be done very soon
The life of only one could be saved
An answer they needed to know by noon
Feelings of warmth touched his wet face
As small blue mittens dried his tears
A tender voice said Daddy don't cry
I will be with you for many years
Gathering him up in his trembling arms
He held him and squeezed him tight
To save his life had been their decision
One he had to live with day and night
A final farewell and as they turned to go
The echoes of the cold wind seemed to say
I love you my dearest husband and son
By your side I walk this Valentine's Day
