A Soldier's Prayer

Bright flashes of light in the distance
And the loud sounds of firing guns
Made his young hands start to tremble
As he stood watch in the parching sun

His arrival here only a few months ago
Left him sad and longing for his home
And late at night when all were asleep
You could hear him crying as he moaned

When he first heard of this war in Iraq
He decided he should go and do his best
To help the people in a foreign land
And serve his country like all the rest

Packing the gear and leaving his family
Was the hardest thing he had ever done
And boarding the plane for his flight
His heart was heavy as if weighing a ton

In this hot humid land he does now abide
Where danger is lurking at each turn
Daily he prays to God to keep them safe
And for his return to America he yearns

A job so stressful and with little pay
Is the life now that he must endure
And as he tries to do his very best
He wonders if there really is a cure

Death, injuries, and massive destruction
He has witnessed with his own eyes
And as his sleep is suddenly interrupted
With dreams hearing their wounded cries

Once again he falls down upon his knees
As with his head bowed begins to pray
And as he speaks to the good Lord above
This is what this young soldier does say

Heavenly Father I thank you for being near
Holding us safely in your mighty hands
And watching over all our loving family
As we serve our country in a foreign land

Lord, I love you and give you the praise
As I know one day we will all be home
If not in the United States of America
Then kneeling beside your golden throne

This poem is written for our brave soldiers
Who fight to keep our country free
They risk their life for us every day
So please pray with this soldier and me
